15 November, 2023

Every year on November 19th, International Men’s Day is celebrated in the UK. This day aims to raise awareness about health issues, challenge stereotypes, promote gender equality and celebrate the positive contributions of men and boys in our society. International Men’s Day provides an opportunity for communities, organisations, and individuals to reflect on the significance of men’s mental health, their well-being, and their role in fostering a more equitable world.

The idea for an International Men’s Day began in the 1990s when Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer from Trinidad and Tobago, initiated the event to encourage men to embrace their responsibilities as fathers, husbands, sons, and friends. Teelucksingh chose November 19th to honour his father’s birthday and also to commemorate the 1989 football team event that had united his country.

The primary objectives of International Men’s Day are:

1. Focusing on men’s and boys’ health.

2. Promoting gender equality.

3. Recognising men’s contributions to community, family, marriage, and childcare.

4. Encouraging positive male role models.

5. Creating a safer world where everyone can live free of harm.

Each year, International Men’s Day focuses on complex issues such as mental health struggles, male suicide rates, family relationships, education or workplace challenges faced by men.

Various events are organised on this day to raise awareness about specific problems men face throughout their lives. Seminars and workshops focus on discussing different aspects that impact men’s overall well-being. These gatherings may be concentrated around topics like health care accessibilities for males, mental health, substance abuse, workplace concerns, or initiating mentorship programs for guiding young boys.

International Men’s Day is not just a day to celebrate men; it is an opportunity to address the unique challenges they face and to emphasise the positive impact they make on society. By raising awareness about these issues and fostering male empowerment, International Men’s Day can facilitate ongoing dialogue that encourages everyone to contribute toward building healthier communities and support systems for the well-being of men and boys.
